Here we are at day one of WordPress. Most people who are reading will be noticing that the penguindevil has moved across from Blogger. So here we are.
I will probably fuss around a bit with it… Of course, I have a little already… As always, once I started tinkering with the template, I started having problems.. All seems well now, and I tested it in all 12 of the browsers I have (yes, even “ie”). So hopefully nothing funky will appear.
Not to fret, all of the posts and comments have come along too. But there won’t be any more posts back there at penguindevil.blogspot.com, and in fact, maybe my other blog will come over too? Who knows.
Anyway, here I be know. Let’s see…
And more updates… I decided to bring my counter stats over from blogspot. After all, why let the trails of all those visitors get forgotten! To make up for it, I swicthed it from counter page loads to “unique visitors”… So there.
i didn’t even know 12 browsers existed!
Yes, well. Browser selection is a tricky thing. There are alot of good ones out there to use:
I mainly use Firefox for its good “all around” qualities, but I find that it crashes alot (especially if I have 6 or 8 tabs open, or am downloading multiple files). But its killer feature is with searching through open documents. Instead of an annoying search window, you get a bar down at the bottom that starts searching as soon as you start typing and has next/previous buttons. No more of those annoying windows that open up and then go away when you hit search, causing you to start over again. I pretty much always have this search bar open and when ever I want to find a word, just click and start typing! Yeah, maybe it doesn’t sound like much. But it’s the killer for me.
Camino is a good alternate, a good general purpose browser.
At one point I tried to stick with Flock, it’s a nice browser (especially aesthetically) but I don’t really grok it’s “Star/favorites” function.
iCab is also quite good (and it easily spoofs other browsers, enabling access to those silly “IE-only” sites). But sometimes it’s look and the way it loads pages doesn’t sit well with me.
Omniweb is quite good but it costs money and it does funny things with tabs. Instead of listing tabbed pages across the top, a drawer opens off the side of the browser where it lists the tabs, either as text or as big thumbnails, which is actually pretty neat. Especially if you, like me, have a habit of opening other tabs when you’re waiting for a page to load. But it certainly feels like it’s about the most mature, smooth browser out there with some good and unique features (and it’s only $15 anyway).
And, ug, while I don’t like Safari, its Activity window is the easiest way that I know of to actually download media that is intended for streaming (Youtube movies and such…)
Other ones good for a spin?
Deskbrowse (the address bar is at the bottom!?),
Sunrisebrowser is designed for web designers, so it has a bunch of interesting features along those lines. It even features a transparency slider in the menu bar so you can see through the browser, you know, if you want to be able to read something behind the browser…
Anyway, I’m getting a bit long in the tooth about this…
