Up to the Devil’s Rest

Well yes, after a long break, a went for a hike. Finally. Paul and I went out and took on an easy one (since I hadn’t been out for a while and I didn’t want to be away from the family for long).

We went up to Devil’s Rest. As I said, it was short (only about 4 hours) but quite nice. For starters, we followed the same path up the wonderful Waukeena Falls that was mentioned in a post from a year ago. What was it like? Well the first part is a fairly long (with some fairly steep switchbacking) ascent along Waukeena, which is a lengthy stairway-like cascade of water. It runs through a narrow valley and is quite pleasant.

view from the beginning to the main falls
After a nice walk, you come to the Falls themselves, and the nice, curved, stone bridge that passes pleasantly in front.

A refreshing spray
You pass the point where we switched off last time, the path to Multnomah and head a good deal higher up to the Devil’s Rest. I didn’t take any photots there, because there is no view, but we went back down a bit to a stop off of the path and had lunch. There I took some pictures.

Here’s the view down (and my foot), if the pictures was bigger, you could see the birds-of-prey circling around below us.

Here is the view straight out…

Down towards the river (the white and red line in the middle of the picture is a tugboat with barges).

And a nice view across the Columbia to Washington
Then, I took a few more shots on the way back down. It is just so nice here that each direction has pleasing new angles.

Here is a smaller falls, but very nice with a nice bench to watch the surroundings from.

And just a parting shot of the stream and the trail…
Anyway, it is a very nice hike. Though you are mainly climbing, there is a nice combination of steep and not steep and it’s short enough that the hike doesn’t consume your entire day.
